addressing injustice

The headlines have gotten louder, cymbals crashing out a steady beat of bad news.
I hesitate to write anything, and wonder if taking time to try to find the right words is another indication that I am privileged. I understand that I will never understand. But I am listening, and I will keep learning. I do not want to be a silent bystander to the brutality that black families fear. I try to teach the boys what equality looks like, and the concept of fairness is a very tangible thing for them. Together we are committed to fighting racism wherever we find it, including in ourselves.

I love that your four year old was explaining that it's not okay to be mean to people of color. I want to tell your boys about my failures as a college freshman, and about the progress we've made, and about my hopes for them and their friends... and I want to keep learning myself.

Thought for the day:
"I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group." Peggy McIntosh
